Because marriage is such a complicated relationship that involves strong emotions, children, physical intimacy, families, friends, careers, and homes, marriages can become stressed. When the stress becomes unmanageable or replaces the positive nature of the marriage, marital stress can become destructive.

When marital stress begins to deteriorate the foundation of a marriage, the effects are profound and compounded by the complexity of the relationship. Suffering marriages, like suffering patients, often exhibit "symptoms" or signs that the union is damaged.

Did You Know

According to a study by Rutgers University, only 63% of American children grow up with both biological parents—the lowest figure in the Western world.

These signs include:

  • Reduced confidence and instability
  • Lack of communication
  • Unresolved conflicts
  • Lack of intimacy
  • Anger
  • Emotional pain
  • Depression
  • Feelings of betrayal
  • Fear of being alone/fear of remaining married
  • Guilt
  • Weight loss/weight gain
  • Loneliness

No marriage goes without stress and periods of turmoil. It is part of the nature of the relationship. But marital stress does not have to lead to the destruction of the relationship and it has to be confronted in order for the marriage to survive.

Healing Scarred Marriages

In the United States the divorce rate is between 42-45% for first-time marriages, which leads one to the conclusion that many couples consider divorce the right option when the relationship becomes challenging. Divorce can be difficult and result in long-term emotional trauma. If there are children involved, the children can also suffer lasting consequences.

But divorce is not always the right answer. Most couples can benefit from professional counseling and learning to effectively communicate. Often an objective third-party professional can help diffuse tension, bring understanding and tolerance, and restore trust and love. The healing process requires a commitment not just from the counselor, but also from both partners.

When Reconciliation is Not Possible

There are instances where a marriage cannot withstand the pressures and problems that it is exposed to. Even though the marriage fails, it does not mean that those involved are failures or that their lives cannot be meaningful and fulfilling.

For individuals going through a divorce it is important to find social support (friends and family) and to maintain a sense of stability. It is not uncommon for individuals going through a divorce to experience feelings of depression and anxiety. Treatment for these challenges may include individual counseling, participation in support groups, and learning healthy strategies for coping with adversity and trials.

Individuals who have been divorced and are trying to adjust to life after divorce benefit from counseling and education. It is common to feel overwhelmed in the adjustment phase. Finding extra support and useful strategies from experts who understand this challenging time can be very effective in the healing process. Researchers have found that individuals who are experiencing trauma can reduce the long-term consequences by learning the right coping strategies. The earlier the intervention, the sooner healing can occur.
